TALE OF THE VILLAGER’S

“Could you see it?” Asked Marley. Damir was high up on the tree scoping out the area like they always did when they were young, but he could barely recognize the oceanfront through the binoculars. Since the night Damir heard what appeared to be the sound of firecrackers going off, he struggled with finding comfort in the breath of the night. When he peaked through the window that night and didn't see the sky lit up with a burst of colors, he knew they were in imminent danger. In the distance, he could hear the screams of other villagers and unfamiliar boots roaring through the village like a lioness deprived of her cub. He immediately woke up Marley and grabbed the binoculars to search the vicinity, but it was already too late. A large group of men dressed in navy blue uniforms surrounded the front steps of their home. Marley only managed to grab a flashlight before Damir grabbed a hold of her hand and bolted through the back sliding door. Since that night, the sound of twigs snapping underneath their feet sent Damir’s mind scrambling for a place to hide from the alarm of fear ringing in his heart. Their tradition of taking peaks at the horizon to measure the distance it would take for them to reach the ocean was no longer a vacation spot they longed to reach. This new reality of losing all that they spent their entire lives building is a journey that they're no longer eager to explore. It would take them a few more days on foot before they could reach any source of water. They’ve been wandering the forest for two days now and haven’t come across any of the villagers. Damir was becoming more afraid that they may be the only ones left in the village. As Damir look through the binoculars, he realized there were a few limitations they faced along their journey. They were limited on time before the few berries left in their pocket finished. Marley no longer had the strength to climb and rest upon the trees at night. With her condition worsening, Damir was afraid that if they didn’t find a water source, he would soon lose Marley in this extreme heat.
